Khajuraho women want ban on liquorn
BHOPAL:
Women in Khajuraho are up in arms against liquor vends in the tourist
destination, saying, alcohol consumption is breaking families.
Country-made liquor, especially the variety extracted from mahua
(Madhuca longifolia) is very popular among foreign tourists.
Country-made liquor is flowing in this internationally popular tourist
destination particularly during this part of the year. As financial year
comes to an end, deshi sharab is available on discount.
There
is one such shop in Khajuraho and illegal mahua is available in the
villages around, said Mehrun Siddique, woman who led a protest against
alcohol in Khajuraho on Friday.
"When we started protest
against liquor shops, they down their shutters", she said adding, "we
want Khajuraho to be a dry town as liquor consumption is affecting
families. Desi sharab is not only cheap, its illicit sale is increasing
because of popularity among foreigners, who have started staying in
villages away from Khajuraho and in farm houses where it is made
available."
Women are worst affected, said Mehrun, a member of Shaurya Dal, a government initiative.
According to district excise officer P L Rakesh, "minimum margin money
for liquor contract in Khajuraho this year was Rs 5.29 crore. Of this Rs
3.41 crore was for Indian made foreign liquor and Rs 1.77 crore for
country made liquor."
This means, liquor more than Rs 5.29 crore is sold in the city which has a population of about 25,000 only.
Mukhtar Khan, a social worker, who also supported total prohibition in
Khajuraho said, "Government may be getting lots of revenue from tourism
but it should also understand about it's social impact."
More than a lakh foreign tourists visit Khajuraho every year.
Vinod Bharti, another social worker, who was present in the protest
said, "It's a deadly combo of eroticism and alcohol that leads to
decline in moral values in Khajuraho."
Carrying placards, some
female foreign tourists also joined the protest, stating after reports
of increase in domestic violence, women in India needs to be protected.
