Irrfan Khan and Aditi Rao Hydari to star in Rakesh Roshan’s next

MUMBAI: After the success of the superhero franchise Krrish, producer Rakesh Roshan will be now producing a comedy thriller sans Hrithik Roshan.

The yet-to-be titled film will star National award winner Irrfan Khan and Aditi Rao Hydari who will be seen playing his wife. Though nothing further has been revealed about the plot of the film, media reports say that it will also star Kunal Kapoor, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Vijay Raaz in prominent roles. Directed by Abhinay Deo, the film will have music composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The film is slated to go on floors by the end of February and will be extensively shot in Mumbai and Lucknow.

Review: Rahasya is a clever whodunit

A scene from Rahasya
Atmospheric chills and a good story your thing? Watch Rahasya, suggests Nishi Tiwari.
When Dr Rajesh and his wife Nupur emerged as prime suspects in the 2008 twin murders of their teen daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj, the news made nationwide headlines.
While the media chased the story with a rare doggedness, readers were instantly hooked and lapped up every salacious detail of the case that unraveled like the perfect whodunit.

Only this was all real.
While after many twists and turns, the Talwars were convicted by a special CBI court in 2013 for the twin murders and given life term, filmmaker Manish Gupta (of The Stoneman Murders fame) decided to make a movie inspired from this real life murder mystery.
The film has borrowed key events from the murder case -- the setting of the murder, the investigating authorities being periodically suspicious of the missing domestic help and the parents, among others. But it refrains from providing a commentary on the incident, instead choosing to incorporate cinematic liberties to take over where the inspired bits are restricted.
With Ashish Vidyarth as Dr Sachin Mahajan (Rajesh Talwar), Tisca Chopra as his orthopedic surgeon wife Dr Aarti Mahajan (Nupur Talwar), Meeta Vashishth as a family friend who is having an extra marital affair with Sachin, and Kay Kay Menon as the CBI officer investigating the case, Rahasya boasts of impressive performances.

At a little under two hours, this tightly edited whodunit will hold your attention until the very end, while it haunts, intrigues and scares at the same time with rare ease.

The Mahajan’s house, a very posh duplex in a tony Mumbai neighbourhood, is awash in everything white -- the majestic yet ghostly drapes (which, inexplicably, feature in almost all houses that we see in the film), the furnishings, the walls.

I mean it’s all as white and listless as death itself.
The great visuals are amply aided by eerie silences, gray skies, understated background score, minimalistic settings (they don’t go overboard even while capturing squalor) -- they are all as ubiquitous as atmospheric chills on screen can get.
Ashish Vidyarthi as the wrongly implicated father is suitably befuddled, grieving and unraveling as and when the story demands while Tisca Chopra delivers a restrained performance.

Kay Kay Menon, who played a hot-headed cop in Manish Gupta’s directorial debut The Stoneman Murders, plays the investigating CBI official with a flair that we are all too familiar with.
Watch this one if a clever whodunit is your thing.

Akshay's humanitarian initiative for visually-impaired girls

A new social initiative to help train visually-impaired girls has been started by Bollywood star Akshay Kumar with the support of Yuva Sena Chief Aditya Thackeray, recently.
A source says that the programme is a free of cost opportunity for visually handicapped female participants to learn self-defense techniques at the martial arts school run by Akshay in Mumbai.
Many participants have welcomed the programme and have been regularly attending the classes. Buzz has it that the number of participants have been increasing given its rising popularity.
Looking at the encouraging response from the participants, Akshay is happy as he believes it is very important for girls to be trained in self-defense mechanism. We also hear that the actor, who is honed in martial arts, often drops by the exclusive classes to support the participants.
All we can say is, good hai Boss!

PK gets widest Bollywood release in China

The Aamir Khan-starrer is releasing in 3,500 screens, beats Dhoom 3 record

Actor Rahul Roy participates in Mandi auction

Aamir Khan’s inquisitive alien character PK is all set to cross the border and entertain audiences in China. The record breaking movie has scaled yet another high with the widest-ever release for a Bollywood film in the neighbouring country at 3,500 screens.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Hirani in association with Disney’s UTV Motion Pictures, PK is a satire on the practices of self-proclaimed religious heads. The producers have tied up with The China Film Group and Huaxia Film Group for its release in China. This is the first time the two Chinese firms have acquired a film from India directly for its release in The People's Republic of China.

Until now the widest release enjoyed by a Bollywood film in China was Dhoom 3. The Aamir Khan-Abhishek Bachchan cop-robber action drama was released in 2,000 screens in China in July 2014. The film earned $4 million (approx. Rs 24 crore) in China.

More recently, Shah Rukh Khan starrer Happy New Year was set to release in China with an aim to have at least 2,500 screens. However the film is yet to release there.

The Chinese box office was projected to be worth $4.9 billion in 2014. According to the Chinese Film Producers' Association, box-office collections have been growing at a 37 per cent annual rate in that market last year. By contrast, the Indian film industry is projected to be worth $2.2 billion in 2014, according to the Ficci-KPMG Report on media & entertainment in 2013-14.

The Chinese government, which regulates the film industry there, has predicted that the country's box-office collections will exceed those of the US (estimated at $10 billion in 2014) in three years. And the target appears set to be achieved, with annual screen and revenue growth rates stable at around 30%.

Indian films have been trickling into the Chinese theatres of late. In the 1950s, Indian content went past the Great Wall with films like Awaara. But in the years to follow, there was long dry spell that broke only in the early 2000s when Aamir Khan's Lagaan was released in China. After that, a few other Bollywood films like 3 Idiots, My Name is Khan, Chennai Express, Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3 hit Chinese screens. This is mainly due to China’s cap on international films releasing in the country. No more than 34 foreign movies are given permission to release in the country, 90% of which are Hollywood films.

Indian film-makers have been looking at China aggressively and customising the product that they export to China. Following suit, PK will be dubbed in Mandarin. The film will be released by the end of the current quarter.

The announcement was made at a ceremony held in Beijing on Jan 27th, in the presence of the Honourable Ambassador of India to The People's Republic Of China - Ashok Kantha and Honourable Tong Gang, Vice Minister, State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China (SAPPRFT), the heads of China Film Group and Huaxia film group; director Rajkumar Hirani, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, UTV Motion Pictures and other dignitaries.

"This direct collaboration with China Film Group and Huaxia Film Group for PK is a proud moment not just for us at the studio but also for the Indian movie industry as a whole. We were honoured to have senior diplomats and government officials from both countries for the signing. It is exciting that just after 6 weeks of the theatrical release of PK, the film has resonated and is finding an audience in many new markets." said Amrita Pandey, VP and Head, Marketing and Distribution, Studios, Disney India

"I am delighted to know that PK is going to have a major theatrical release in over 3,500 screens in China. I am confident that the film's blend of entertainment, emotion and underlying social message will resonate with audiences in China and elsewhere in the world. I am also pleased that PK will build on the success of 3 Idiots and expand the China market for Indian films in the future," said producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra

"The deal to release PK in China got signed and it's sheer joy to know that the Chinese distributors are excited about the film and will release PK in over 3500 screens, which is as big a release as in India," said director Rajkumar Hirani.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has rubbished claims of his spat with rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. The actor recently told a leading daily, that Singh is a friend and he's not in touch with him only because of the singer's illness.
"I haven't had a fight with him at all. He's a sweetheart and a friend, and I haven't met him for a long time as he has been unwell. I hope he gets well," SRK told Hindustan Times.
"I will surely call him soon, now that you have reminded me. I haven't managed to keep in touch as I am not a very social person. I keep in touch with the people I am working with," he added.
Rumours of differences between the two started floating during SLAM! Tour. It was also said that the superstar had slapped Singh and had asked him to leave the show.
Honey Singh composed and performed to Lungi dance song in SRK's Chennai Express. The singer has been in news for quite sometime due to his mysterious disappearance since his abrupt return from SLAM! Tour in the US.

Recent reports claim that the rapper had checked himself into a rehab. His lyricist Yo reportedly told a Mumbai Mirror that SRK and Yo Yo will never work again.
The tabloid quoted Yo (who collaborated with the rapper on the chart-busting Singham Returns track, Aata Majhi Satakli) as saying, "No way! He's still not made contact with the team of artistes he usually works with and has even changed his cell phone numbers. He told his team that he is taking a break to go home and spend time with his family. But instead, he checked himself into a rehab centre in Chandigarh in October. We worked through the night on the lyrics of Aata Majhi Satakli. That was the last time I met him. I have never seen him use drugs while working. But the rest of the time he was always high."
When quizzed about his alleged fight with the top superstar, the songwriter says, "Neither of them may own up to it but I don't think Honey Singh will ever work with SRK again," says the lyricist.
There has been no comment from Honey Singh or his publicist on either of the controversies so far.

Rahasya' is a very gripping story, says Tisca Chopra

Lead actor of bollywood's much awaited thriller ‘Rahasya' Tisca Chopra while promoting the film in Mumbai has said it's a very gripping film. The film which is said to be based on India's biggest murder mystery Aarushi Talwar's murder case is directed by Manish Gupta. Rahasya also features Kay Kay Menon, Ashish Vidyarthi, Mita Vashisht and Ashwini Kalsekar in the lead roles and is slated for a 30th January release.

Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Raees' lavish set under construction

Shah Rukh Khan’s much awaited film ‘Raees’ swings into action. The film that is set in the 1980s era in Ahemdabad also marks the debut of Mahira Khan. Ahmedabad has changed a lot since then in terms of architecture and manner of living and hence an entire new set is being constructed at ‘Film City’ in Mumbai. The team is recreating certain parts of Ahmedabad from that time.

Also, they have some action sequences which they would prefer to shoot indoors rather than on a real location. It is a massive set up and there is work going on around the clock. The team is looking into minor and intricate details and trying to ensure that the set is complete at the earliest.

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, the film which will see the 'Humsafar' star playing the wife of a gangster (Shah Rukh Khan), will also feature critically-acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a cop.

The women in the our family are extremely lucky: Anu Hasan
Anu Hasan
Anu Hasan is an actress, a dubbing artiste, a TV host, an entrepreneur, writer, a basketball player, a trumpet player and if that's not enough, an avid traveller. In the city for an event, she gave Hyderabad Times a sneak peek into her crazy life and the role of her illustrious surname:

What I learnt from my family...
I was Anuradha C in college, but once people got to know my surname, I got plenty of attention. But after a point, you learn to live with it. I don't know if it was the genes or the environment that we grew up in, that all of us in the family — be it Kamal Haasan, Suhasini Maniratnam, Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan, have a penchant for acting, music and performing arts. My grandmother once told my uncle (Kamal Haasan) 'Even if you are a rag picker, remember that you must do your job so well that you should be the best at it'. And it's a philosophy that all of us in the family have followed. I believe that the women in the Hasan family are extremely lucky because we have such fantastic men. They are extremely liberal and modern in their views. Even the women from the older generation are supercats!

The first lesson I learnt in life...
I used to ace all my exams and even in college, I felt I could do anything. I got my first reality check in BITS-Pilani where I did a dual degree in Physics and Management. One day, I called up my father and began crying. And he said, 'Do you think I sent you to college, that too in Rajasthan, to just get good grades? No. I wanted you to learn about life.' So, I ended up doing everything except studying. And I made some really close friends who have been my pillar of strength for over 25 years now.

A life without any regrets...
My mother calls me a Thanjavur Bommai, because no matter how hard life has punched me, I have managed to bounce back. I am a very positive person and I love myself. Even when I got divorced, I dealt pain with blankness to begin with, and ended it with flippancy.

Being a travel junkie...
I have had my so called wild days and my friends tell me that I don't need to party or smoke up to be on a high. I love travelling alone and once, when I pointed my finger at the map and decided to travel there, I ended up in Cyprus. I travelled around a bit there and went to a dam site all alone. When I came back, I was told that the whole area was infested with rattle snakes. It's more stupid than wild when I think about it now.

How I got into acting...
My cousin Suhasini Maniratnam was about to direct her first Tamil film, Indira and she asked me if I could act and I said didn't want to. She retorted, "It's not a question of whether you want to or not, I am asking you if you know how to act." My ego was hurt and I wanted to prove a point. And before I knew it, I had auditioned for the film and got the lead role.

You have to learn to like yourself first...
I did the role of a cop in a Tamil film and in another film, Aakki, I did the role of a hockey coach. I believe that women are so concerned about how they look that they lose out on some interesting opportunities. I may not look nice as a coach, but I look the part. You have to learn to like yourself first. I have no illusions about my looks.

I can't say the 'F' word...
Last year, I shot for a British TV series, Cucumber, a gay drama. In one of the scenes, I had to say the 'F' word, but no matter how hard I tried, during the rehearsals, I couldn't get myself to get it right. I don't know how I managed to say it during the actual shoot. Believe it or not, I have never said the 'F' word ever in my life before filming that scene.

MUMBAI: As Barack Obama today paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat memorial in Delhi, it enlivened memories of the US President's visit to the Mani Bhavan here four years back.

The Mani Bhavan, where Gandhi used to stay during his visit to the city, has been converted into a Gandhi museum.

After visiting the historical building on November 7, 2010, the US President, who was accompanied by First Lady Michelle Obama, had described Mahatma Gandhi as a hero for the entire world.

Obama had hailed the Father of the Nation as "a hero not just to India but to the world."

"I am filled with hope and inspiration as I have the privilege to view this testament to Gandhi's life. He is a hero not just to India but to the world," Obama had written in the visitor's book at the Mani Bhavan here, with a cupboard teetering with books of the Mahatma in the background.

Obama, who is a self-confessed admirer of Gandhi, had alongwith his wife spent about 45 minutes going around the simple, old-style, two-storey building on Laburnum Road in South Mumbai where the Father of the Nation stayed during his visits to Mumbai.

The US President has in his speeches often cited Gandhi has having a major influence on him.

Michelle had said she will always "treasure" the visit to honour Gandhi's memory.

"The visit will be one that I will always treasure. The life and teachings of Gandhi must be shared with our children around the world," she wrote in the visitors book.

"It would have been nice to see Obama at Mani Bhavan again but I am aware that such things are not fixed at a short notice," Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya's Executive Secretary Meghshyam Asgaonkar told

"During his visit, I recall that he appeared to be very impressed seeing Gandhi's simplicity when he went to his living room.

"Obama liked the wooden structure and also the library. He had lauded us for retaining Gandhiji's room as it was and had become very emotional while in the room," he said.

The room on the second floor, which used to be the living room and working place of Gandhi, has been preserved in its near-original setting.

Asgaonkar said Obama had also visited the adjoining room which is houses an exhibition depicting Gandhi's life through mini figures in about 28 tableaux. The rooms on either side of the exhibition have been turned into a photo gallery which gives glimpses of Gandhi in Mani Bhavan and the important events in his life.

It was at Mani Bhavan where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Mumbai (then Bombay) and from where he launched some of his path-breaking initiatives like Swadeshi, Khadi, the non-cooperation and Khilafat movements. The modest building served as Gandhi's headquarters in Mumbai for about 17 eventful years from 1917-1934.

Visitors from all over the world come to Mani Bhavan to see the room Gandhi occupied, its picture gallery, the library hall and the terrace where he was arrested on January 4, 1932.

Obama in his speeches has often said that Gandhi has inspired Americans and African Americans, including Dr Martin Luther King. During a school interaction in the US, Obama had once said that if it was possible, he would have loved to have dinner with Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi launched the satyagraha from Mani Bhavan in 1919 and the civil disobedience movement in 1932. In many ways Mani Bhavan played a crucial role in moulding the course of history.

Gandhi's association with the charkha (spinning wheel) began in 1917 during his stay in Mani Bhavan.

The library consists of around 50,000 books and periodicals, several of them on and by Gandhi. On the first floor is the auditorium where films on Gandhi are shown from time-to-time and recordings of his speeches are played on request.

Obama has never missed an opportunity to mention how Gandhi has had a major influence on him. It's well known that Mahatma Gandhi's portrait hangs in Barack Obama's Senate office.

"In my life, I have always looked at Mahatma as an inspiration because he embodies the kind of transformational change that can be made when ordinary people come together to do extraordinary things" - wrote Obama in a newspaper before becoming President.

It's sad: Dibakar Banerjee on Pakistan's 'Baby' ban

Kolkata: In the wake of Pakistan banning Akshay Kumar-starrer "Baby", filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee says such incidents in India and Pakistan are "sad".
Banerjee also said both neighbours will end up paying a "heavy price" if these incidents continue.
"I can't comment on the film. I haven't seen it. I can't comment if the ban is justified or not. All I can say is it's sad.
"Whatever is happening in India and Pakistan is not only sad, but also foolish," Banerjee told  here Friday on the sidelines of the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet.
Directed by Neeraj Pandey, the movie revolves around an undercover unit, formed to keep an eye on the movements of terrorist groups and to nix their plans to disrupt peace and harmony.
The film also stars Rana Daggubati, Danny Denzongpa and Tapsee Pannu and has been released in India Friday. The film also features Pakistani actor Mikaal Zulfiqar and Rasheed Naz.
Banerjee said: "Both India and Pakistan are going to pay a very heavy price, very soon, if they do not stop behaving."

Thought I'd get typecast in Bollywood: Taapsee Pannu

Mumbai: Actress Taapsee Pannu is glad that she landed a role in "Baby" as she feared getting typecast in "college girl" roles in Bollywood.
"After 'Chashme Baddoor', I was getting the same kind of college girl role offers. I thought I will get typecast in Bollywood and will not get anything else. So I thought before I get stamped for doing similar roles, I should do 'Baby'. I'm glad I did this film," Taapsee told IANS.
Directed by Neeraj Pandey, the film features Akshay Kumar, Rana Daggubati and Anupam Kher, and it tackles the theme of terrorism.
Taapsee, who has done her fair share of movies in Tamil and Telugu, says she had never planned to be an actor.
"I was sure that I can never act. I can never pretend in front of the camera. I thought this was a wrong profession for me. I was interested in studies. But if something is written in your destiny, it will happen," she said.

I play a diva in 'Shab': Raveena Tandon

Bollywood Actress Raveena Tandon has just opted out of Anurag Kashyap's 'Bombay Velvet'
Bollywood Actress Raveena Tandon has just opted out of Anurag Kashyap's 'Bombay Velvet'

Mumbai: She has been away from Bollywood for quite sometime but for actress Raveena Tandon it was not a tough call to play a negative role in Onir's upcoming romantic
film Shab. Raveena, 41, who is making a comeback to films after a gap of three years, said she wanted a challenging role to make her return to Bollywood.

"I really wanted to do something challenging and fun. I opted for Shab because Onir is a dear friend and the character which I am playing in the film is something which I didn't do earlier."

"It's a role of a diva but has shades of grey in it and in the film I walk through a very thin line between positive and negative. Onir gave me the other role first but I wanted this role because I have not played such a character before. I was more excited to play the negative part," Raveena said in an interview.

'Shab', a Delhi set drama, is a love triangle and stars Prosenjit Chatterjee's wife Arpita and Ashish Bisht, both are making their Bollywood debut. Sanjay Suri and designer Wendell Rodricks are making guest appearance in the film.

Raveena said she was always the first choice for Shab, which Onir wrote almost 14 years ago when he was assisting Kalpana Lajmi in Daman. The 2001 film starred Raveena and Suri. She won a national award for playing a tortured wife in the film.

"Onir directed us in Daman because Kalpana fell ill for a long time during the shooting of the film. Onir discussed the idea during that time with me and wanted to start up the project in a year or two. I got pregnant in 2004 and film went to the back burner," she said. Raveena, who has two children with husband Anil Thadani and two adopted kids, has done only a handful of films since her marriage.

Her last film Shobhana 7 Nights, which was considered as her comeback to Bollywood after pregnancy, is yet to have a box-office release. "Shobhana 7 Nights was a festival film. I won best actress award in Chicago film festival. It was a great learning experience for me. I don't think the film is meant for box-office," she said.
